How Much Planning Should You Put Into Furnishing Your Brand New Home?

August 7, 2017 9:13 pm

Once you’ve got your brand new home, you’re naturally going to want to fill it up. Your choice of furniture will play a big role in the feel of your home. You may find yourself opening a dozen tabs at Ikea.com. You might want to slow down, however, and put some thought into your design plans. Your home builders didn’t finish your home in a day. Taking the time to think through your furnishings can help you create exactly the style you want to use with your furniture.

So how fast should you move to fill your home with furniture and decorations? At the pace that feels comfortable to you. It’s okay if your home doesn’t look like you’ve lived there for 20 years. You’ll get there. Here are some things to consider when looking at furnishing a brand new home.

Don’t worry about empty rooms

Many people move from apartments to houses. If this is you, you probably know your apartment doesn’t have enough furniture to fill every room of your brand new home. It’s okay to leave a room empty. You can even use an empty room to set a stage. Leaving your front room empty sets the stage for a very minimalistic design philosophy that works very well in a brand new home.

Keep an Eye Out for Consignment and Thrift Store Finds

It will take some time, and this is one of the best reasons not to rush into furnishing your brand new home. With a treasure hunting, you could find that perfect couch at a thrift store. Many items donated to thrift stores are in excellent or even like-new condition. When you find your dream couch at the thrift store, you get more than just saving money. Every time your friends and family comment on how beautiful your couch is, you get to tell the story about how you found it at a thrift store, what a great deal you got, and the fact that it’s very likely one of a kind in your area.

Another thing you’ll want to keep an eye out for at consignment shops and thrift stores is antique or unique furniture. You never know when you’ll find that one of a kind end table that you’ll fall in love with.

Know the Size of Your Rooms

This one should seem obvious, but it’s important all the same. Nothing feels worse than purchasing that beautiful new table just to get it to your brand new home and see it doesn’t work in the room. When you’re looking at furniture online or in a showroom, it can be difficult to picture it in your room. If you’re familiar with your room’s layout and sizes, it becomes much easier to find the right furniture for the right room.

Plan Out Each Room

We’re talking about the biggest purchase of your life, followed by many other medium sized purchases. With the kind of money you’re looking at spending, careful planning is important. Spend some time in each room, sit in the empty room and work out a list of what you need for that room. You don’t have to get specific. Start with large pieces of furniture like couches, beds, chairs, and tables. And then keep listing items until you can’t think of even the smallest thing. Do this for each room of your brand new home, even the hallways.

Prioritize Each Room

Once you know what each room needs, it’s time for you to choose your priorities. Go over the list of rooms you have, and put them in whatever order you think is most important. A good rule of thumb is to make sure this list matches how much time you’ll spend in each room. If you’re never going to be in the den, it’s a lot less important than your bedroom, where you’ll spend a lot of time.

Most Importantly, Enjoy it

Furnishing and decorating your home is a way to express your creativity. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a break. You’re going to have this home for many years to come, you don’t have to finish in a week. When you make sure you’re enjoying your creative outlet, you’ll be happier, and your results will be better too.
